Man Fails to Show Legal Ownership of A Van Load of Citrus

A man who was unable to provide the legal proof that he bought a  van load of 2500 Portugals and oranges when police stopped him in Tamana has been charged.

Omar Ali, 45, of Cumuto man pleaded not guilty when he appeared in the Sangre Grande Magistrate Court on Thursday.

 He was granted his own bail in the amount of TT$5,000  on the charge of “failing to provide a memorandum of sale or delivery for a quantity of citrus, found in his possession”.

Officers of the Cumuto Police station along with members of the Praedial Larceny Squad were carrying out enquiries in the Tamana district, when they stopped a red Isuzu D-max transporting a quantity of citrus.

“Upon seeing the officers, a passenger of the vehicle exited and fled into some bushes,” the police report stated.

“Police held the driver and asked him to show legal ownership of the fruits, pursuant to Section 9 of the Praedial Larceny Prevention Act.

   “Ali however, was unable to provide this to the officers. He was arrested and taken to the Cumuto Police Station where he was charged.

   Ali is expected to return to court on February 27th.
