Man Fatally Shot By Police In Morvant

An early morning encounter with police officers ended with one man being shot and killed, after he allegedly pointed a firearm in their direction.

According to reports, the deceased, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was seen walking along the roadway at Cipriani Avenue, Second Caledonia at around 2am on Sunday, when Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) officers who were on patrol noticed him “acting suspiciously” and asked him to stop. 

The man is said to have attempted to escape the officer’s running off into a nearby building.

He was later caught after a brief chase.

According to the officer’s account,  the man pointed a firearm in their direction, prompting one of the officers to open fire, in keeping with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s Use of Force policy.

The man was shot several times and was rushed to the Port of Spain General Hospital, however, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A 9mm pistol was seized at the scene of the shooting.
