Managers First To Be Axed In WASA Restructuring

By Newsroom

A top to bottom firing approach will go ahead at the Water and Sewerage Authority, with more than 200 managers set to be retrenched as the State-owned entity moves towards a transformation.

The restructuring exercise, which got the green light from Cabinet on Thursday, will eventually see the termination of some lower level staff as well, as technology is introduced.

WASA currently employs some 5,000 people- a figure which Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales says is well over what’s needed.

“It cannot be business as usual,” Minister Gonzales said, noting the Authority’s restructuring is aimed at reducing costs by 25 per cent and increasing revenue collection by $1 billion.

Over a ten year period from 2010-2020, $25 billion was transferred to WASA which the Public Utilities Minister said would make it reasonable to expect that “as a country, we would have a world-class water and wastewater facility”.

“We have anything but that and the sad truth is that the majority of the population can attest to that,” the Minister said, justifying the restructuring.
