Mia Mottley Wins Second Term As Barbados PM In Landslide Victory

By Newsroom

For a second consecutive time in the country’s history, Mia Mottley has been elected as Prime Minister of Barbados. Her party- the Barbados Labour Party- has won all 30 of the seats up for grabs in the general election on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s election went ahead despite an injunction filed to stop it, with the High Court in Barbados ruling on Tuesday that the matter should have been filed in an elections court as the High Court held no jurisdiction over the case.

The Opposition had argued that the election, called by Mottley in December, was unjustified, due to elections not being constitutionally due until 2023. It further offered that the current environment was unfair, given Covid-19 positive patients- some 5,000- were unable to participate at the polls.

The main Opposition party, the Democratic Labour Party, is due to hold a media conference on Thursday.

Mottley is now the second political leader in the Caribbean to earn a clean sweep victory two times in a row.

The first Caribbean leader to achieve this feat was Grenadian Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, whose New National Party won all 15 seats in 2018.
