Member of Parliament for Couva South, Rudy Indarsingh, has described reports of sexual abuse at the Couva Children’s Home and Crisis Nursery as disturbing and sad.
On Monday, it was revealed that a 12-year-old boy at the facility had been tranferred after reports that he abused two younger boys at te home, ages five and six.
The boys have also been transferred from the facility.
There have also been allegations that prior to the most recent report of abuse, the minor exhibited a pattern of abuse over years, however these incidents were able to go under the radar due to a senior Board member having a personal bond with the child.
MP Indarsingh calls on the Gender and Child Affairs Minister to state whether she had knowledge of any such earlier incidents
On Tuesday, the Children’s Authority addressed the abuse report and says it will maintain confidentiality as it continues its investigations into the matter, alongside the TTPS.
The Authority adds that psycho-social support will be provided to the minor who is accused of abusing other children, younger than him. Measures have also been taken to safeguard the victims.
Meanwhile, another Opposition MP Barry Padarath said there must be some account as to whether the recommendations of the Justice Judith Jones report into the operations of children’s homes in the country have been implemented and if so to what extent.
