Minister: WASA’s Estimated 3,000 Leaks To Be Repaired By September

By Newsroom

To say that there are more than 50,000 water leaks across the country “could not be further from the truth”.

That’s according to Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales, as he hosted a media conference on Monday to respond to allegations leveled against the Water and Sewerage Authority by Opposition MP, Dr. Roodal Moonilal.

Minister Gonzales acknowledged that there is a current leak backlog, but said the figure is closer to 3,000.

This, he said, should be resolved by the end of next month, as WASA will work with external contractors to meet the unofficial deadline.

Minister Gonzales also refuted claims that government had entered a secret arrangement with a Canadian firm to restructure WASA, and that it had signed an NDA agreement in the matter.

“I was flabbergasted when I heard that,” the Minister said of the allegation, calling it “devious and lying.”
