Morvant Man Killed In Second Police Involved Shooting This Week

By Newsroom

A Morvant man was killed in a police involved shooting on Thursday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Nigel Mayers, also known as Dufflo. Police say they went to the area at around 6:30 with the intent of executing a search warrant for arms and ammunition. However, they were allegedly greeted with gunfire upon arriving at the scene, prompting them to fire back.

Mayers is the second man to be killed this week while officers attempted to execute a search warrant. On Wednesday, Anthony Junior Skinner was killed at his home in Smith Hill, Carenage.

In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service said Mayers was charged 13 times on 13 separate occasions for possession of firearms and ammunition, and released on bail on all occasions.

This has seemingly been used to forward Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith’s call for amendments to the Bail Amendment Bill, specifically to deny bail for firearm offenders.

The TTPS statement read: “If we had a criminal justice system which was not balanced in favour of the criminals, and a proper Bail Act, Mayers would have been in custody and many lives may have been saved. The CoP says that based on intelligence reports, Mayers may have been suspected to be involved in numerous murders. Among other charges laid against Mayers included murder, attempted murder, shooting with intent, assaulting a police officer, wounding with intent, possession of firearms and ammunition to endanger lives, and kidnapping.”
