National Trust Benefits From US $200K Grant, To Be Used For Heritage Sites Conservation Study

By Newsroom

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago has secured a US$200,000 Grant from the United States Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.

The funds will help undertake an investigation of climate change solutions for endangered cultural heritage in Trinidad and Tobago, using sites in Downtown Port of Spain and Nelson Island as the focal areas.

The National Trust will partner with the University of Florida’s Historic Preservation Program to execute the project.

Chairman of the National Trust Margaret McDowall said the Trust wished to thank the US Embassy for its interest and assistance as this Fund would enable the Trust to undertake this complex conservation project that could impact many other sectors of the country’s economy.

Ms. McDowall explained that the project will start in January 2022, and includes provisions for local academics, students, and communities to benefit from training and exposure to the technology being used in the project and the conservation management strategies to be developed.
