New Policy Document For Contract Workers In Public Service

By Newsroom

Cabinet will soon receive a note on revised guidelines for contract employees within the public service.

Chief Personnel Officer Dr. Darryl Dindial told a Public Administration and Appropriations Committee of Parliament on Wednesday that the document is 98% complete, with the loose ends being minor corrections to earlier submissions to the line Minister of Public Administration, Allyson West.

The document tackles concerns such as recruitment, vacation, terminal leave and maternity leave.

In drafting the new national policy, Dr. Dindial said consideration was also given to past rulings of the Industrial Court, pertaining to what was deemed to be unfair industrial relations practices.

“For contract employees, we are actually putting in a code of conduct, and a disciplinary process to deal with some of the issues that Ministries and Departments are confronted with,” Dr. Dindial revealed.

“So the document has taken on a very broad approach. It encompasses all of the things, I would say, that contract management should consider,” he added.

The document, which had originally been due in March of this year, is almost complete and should be submitted to line Minister Allyson West by Friday.

It could then go before the Cabinet by December or early next year, as decided by Minister West.
