Nigel De Freitas has been declared the new President of the Senate.

It comes as Christine Kangaloo submitted her resignation yesterday to clear the way for a vote of the Electoral College on Friday, where she has been nominated to serve as this country’s next Head of State.

Senator De Freitas previously served as a Minister in the Ministry of Agriculture.

He was elected during a sitting of the Senate on Wednesday morning. 

Meanwhile, Wednesday’s sitting also saw Rishi Sookai being appointed as a government senator. 

Mr. Sookai has served as President of the Chaguanas Business Chamber, but has resigned from that position to serve on the government bench in the Parliament.
