Nine Women Killed in Domestic Violence

By Newsroom

There have been nine cases of domestic violence which ended in murder for the year 2020. An additional five cases of assault were reported to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS).

However, “in excess of 25 persons” have been arrested among whom are persons who breached protection orders.

That’s according to Acting Inspector Lystra Bridgelal of the  Gender and Domestic Violence Unit (GDVU) of the TTPS who spoke at the weekly police briefing on Thursday morning.

“Electronic Monitoring equipment is already in the hands of the unit which has already started training personnel.

“All that’s needed is for the legislation  to be implemented,” Bridgelal said while giving the assurance that the system will be on stream in the “near future.”

“We will have a dedicated team of personnel within the GDVU to monitor the software. In the event there is a breach the unit will be alerted and, with the assistance of other officers, they will make an intervention.

The GDVU is staffed by fifty officers  who are scattered throughout nine police divisions and includes one civilian manager and one coordinator with additional civilian posts to be filled.

“We plan to prosecute the crime which, based on current statistics, are mainly against women and children, to the fullest extent of the law.

“The officers, coupled with the civilian staff assigned to the unit will work in tandem with a case management model that will include follow up, Ag Inspector Bridgelal said.

“We are paying special attention to the role of protection orders,” she assured.
