No ‘Firm’ Decision Yet On Carnival 2022, Says Culture Minister

By Newsroom

There’s not yet any firm decision regarding the hosting of Carnival type celebrations this year, according to Tourism and Culture Minister Randall Mitchell.

Responding to a question in the Upper House on Tuesday, Minister Mitchell said the State was yet to come to a final decision due to the presence of the Omicron Covid-19 variant, which is projected to soon be in the early stages of community spread.

The Culture Minister said his Ministry continues engaging with a number of Carnival Stakeholders to determine the path forward.

These stakeholders include but are not limited to: the National Carnival Commission, Pan Trinbago, TUCO, the T&T Carnival Bands Association,  the T&T Promoters Association, Tourism Trinidad Limited, Tobago Tourism Agency Limited, the Ministries of Health, National Security, Digital Transformation and the Office of theAttorney General.

Should public events be held, the Minister confirmed that the venues would be regarded as designated Safe Zones, meaning only fully vaccinated patrons will be welcomed.
