One Dead, One Critical After Confrontation With Police

The TTPS has disclosed that around 10:45 a.m. on Monday 4th August, 2025; officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service responded to intelligence received regarding armed men gathering in the vicinity of Mc Shine Lands, Laventille.

The officers responded to the report and encountered two suspects who were armed with firearms. The suspects proceeded to confront officers after being called upon to surrender, and in keeping with the use of force policy, the officers engaged both suspects who received injuries.

They were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where one was pronounced dead on arrival, and the other is currently listed in critical condition under police guard. Four illegal firearms were recovered from the scene (one Sig Rifle and 3 pistols) which was processed by Crime Scene Investigators (CSIs) and investigations are ongoing.

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro reiterated his earlier warnings to criminal elements to desist from challenging police officers. He also issued a call for them to surrender their illegal firearms by calling the nearest police station, 999 or 555, and informing the police of the location. He added that, “some of your counterparts have already given up their illegal weapons, so do not be the last in line”.

The CoP indicated that the TTPS will continue to respond decisively and lawfully to threats against public safety and our officers, whilst maintaining transparency and accountability in investigations of this nature.
