Opposition Lays Blame On PM, Health Team, As T&T Records 1,000 Covid-19 Deaths

The Opposition United National congress is doubling down on its condemnation of the team of health professionals leading the management the pandemic, as T&T recorded a milestone of 1,000 deaths from the virus on Tuesday.

“We wait to see whether the government will let this pass without any reflections to consider lessons learned, without any condolences to the 1,000 and more families — in this small country of 1.4 million people — who have been affected by these deaths. What is most astonishing is that roughly 800 of these deaths have occurred in just the past 3 months, during the very State of Emergency which was supposed to prevent such an outbreak,” it said in a statement on Wednesday morning.

The Opposition also renewed its call for a Commission of Enquiry into government’s management of the pandemic, which it says is crucial for accountability.

“One must ask, since when has it ever been acceptable to blame persons for catching a virus? If it is not acceptable for HIV or other deadly viruses, then why is it normal practice to blame persons for catching covid and dying? This is absolutely unacceptable,” it said.

As it stands, T&T has recorded a total of Covid-19 infections since March 12th, 2020. One thousand of those patients have died, while another 29,663 have recovered.

There are currently 5,691 active cases remaining, with 301 of those patients hospitalized.

Latest statistics from the Ministry of Health show that a total of 262,976 people have been vaccinated for Covid-19 with one dose, while another 174,992 have been fully inoculated with two shots.
