Opposition Prepared To Challenge Proposed Amendments To THA Act

The Opposition Leader says her party is prepared for a legal challenge over government’s proposed amendments to the Tobago House of Assembly Act.

She made the revelation during the UNC’s Virtual Report on Monday night.

Calling the move an attempt by central government to highjack of the democratic process in Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar questioned whether the Prime Minister consulted with both parties in Tobago on the matter.

“But you don’t want a tie-breaker. Because you want to use your friends and family in the EBC to gerrymander the boundaries, to give the PNM a victory where there was none.  That is how I see this- an obscene grab for power,” she said.

One of the main amendments to be proposed by government in the Parliament this week, is a change to the number of Assemblymen from 12 to 15, in order to omit the possibility of a future deadlock.

Earlier this month, Persad-Bissessar said she believed there was no need for fresh polls to resolve the deadlock in Tobago, instead recommending that the issue be resolved by the THA Clerk.
