The TTPS through its Victim and Witness Support Unit (VWSU) have assited over 100 families during the ongoing Christmas season with the donation of hampers of essential items.

According to a statement from the TTPS:

The presentations were made during the VWSU’s Christmas Kindness Project 2023 which was held on December 12th at the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) Retiree’s Association Mess Hall, Riverside Plaza, Besson Street, Port-of-Spain.

The hampers were sponsored by several key stakeholders and were distributed to clients from the 10 Policing Divisions. This is the third edition of the event with previous instalments held in 2019 and 2020.

Addressing the attendees, Head – Social Services, Aisha Corbie, underscored that the hampers were not superficial, however, they were a continued expression and commitment to ensuring the overall well-being of the clients. According to Corbie, the VWSU’s clients continue to confront unique challenges as a result of their experiences with crime.

In recognising this, she said, the Unit advocates and lobbies for the ongoing need for assistance, specifically for families who have lost their primary breadwinners due to homicide, individuals who have been victims of domestic violence and were financially dependent on their abusers, as well as clients who are still grappling with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Victim and Witness Support Officer, Dafina Tyson, further explained that the Christmas Kindness Project 2023 provides a “glimmer of hope during a time of year that can be especially demanding for those who struggle to support their families.”

Tyson said, “By distributing hampers filled with essential items and holiday spirit, we aim to alleviate feelings of anxiety, depression, and sadness among our clients. These hampers will not only offer vital resources but also symbolise the VWSU’s enduring support for those who have endured significant trauma. Our aim is to help these families cope with the life-altering effects of their circumstances and foster a renewed sense of faith and optimism in their lives.”
