Pastor Awong charged

By Newsroom

Just about three months after an early morning raid on his premises in Arouca, Pastor Glen Awong was charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment and trafficking in persons.

The charges were laid last night. Awong, the ex-convict who started the Transformed Life Ministries at  Arouca, has been in Police custody since Monday when he gave himself up, knowing the cops were ready to lay the charges.

He is due to appear in court today.

The Special Operations Response Team raided the facility,  located at the Eastern Main Road in Arouca, in October and released  69 persons who were being “treated” at the facility, some of whom were locked in cages.

Awong’s charges cover the period January 30, 2019 to July 2019.

At the time of the early morning raid in October top cop Gary Griffith described it as a major crackdown in a human trafficking ring.

Transformed Life Ministry’s mission, according to its website “is to serve male ex-prisoners and deportees, by providing safe transitional housing, developmental and rehabilitation programmes, to promote healthy reintegration into society.

It was created 19 years ago by Glen Awong after his “personal experience and socialisation with prisoners while serving a seven-year term at the Golden Grove Prison”.  Among was released early for good behaviour.

Awong has received millions of dollars in government funding under the street dwellers programme with the Ministry of Social Development.

At the time of the raid on his facility, Awong claimed that he still owed more than a million dollars.
