PM Calls On Kamla To Withdraw Motion To Remove President

By Newsroom

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has called on the Opposition Leader to withdraw her motion attempting to remove President Paula-Mae Weekes from office.

At a PNM meeting in San Fernando last night, Dr. Rowley said the motion- the first of its kind in the history of Trinidad and Tobago- could be damaging for the country’s record and reputation.

Moreover, he said the motion was baseless, reiterating that there was no collusion between him and President Weekes, to interfere with the Top Cop selection process.

“I’d like to ask the Opposition leader, based on what she knows now, notwithstanding your concern or malice before, don’t put our country through that (motion) – don’t put that on our country’s record, don’t stain our country – withdraw this motion,” the PM said.

History will be made in the House of Representatives on Thursday, where an Extraordinary sitting has been called to debate the Opposition’s motion to have President Paula-Mae Weekes removed from office.

On Sunday, President Weekes  broke her silence over the weekend, denying she had acted unconstitutionally in matters relating to the Police Service Commission and the process to select a Police Commissioner.

The debate is set to begin at 10:30am on Thursday.
