PM Rowley: Apology For Cipriani Statue Faux Pas Should Come From POS Mayor, Not Me

By Newsroom

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says he too had some questions about the Port of Spain Corporation’s decision to cover the statue of Arthur Cipriani at the Brian Lara Promenade with Christmas decorations.

The festive decorations have since been taken down, following heavy criticism from trade unionists and historians.

Asked by the Opposition to offer an apology to the labour movement, Dr. Rowley said he assumed no responsibility for the move, adding any apology should come from the Mayor of Port of Spain.

“There is a great distinction between the Office of the Prime Minister and the Port-of-Spain Corporation. What went on is a decision of the Port-of-Spain City Corporation and if there is to be any apology if that’s my colleague is looking for, I’d ask you to ask the Mayor of Port-of-Spain about it. I assume no responsibility for them.”

Dr. Rowley was responding to a question during Monday’s sitting of the House of Representatives.

He noted the matter wasn’t handled by the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) but by the Port- of- Spain City Corporation and Udecott.

“And I think I’ve seen where Captain Cipriani is being ‘unclothed’,” Rowley quipped on the return to normal view of the statue,” he said.
