PM Rowley Denies Interference In Police Service Commission

By Newsroom

“An absolute falsehood.”

That’s how Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley described the Opposition’s allegation that he met with President Paula-Mae Weekes in an attempt to influence the Merit List for the selection of a substantive Police Commissioner.

PM Rowley addressed the PSC controversy during a media conference on Saturday.

“No such meeting took place. And I’ll go further. I have never involved myself in any selection by the PSC, I have seen no list, whether it is substantive post or acting post. All of that business would have been between the PSC and the President and of course as Parliament we did intervene later on indicating to you that it came to our attention that an error has been made,”  he said.

He said the trouble surrounding the fiasco was “largely as a result of a series of legal interpretations.”

His comments come one day after Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar announced she filed a motion in the Parliament for a tribunal to be set up to investigate President Paula-Mae Weekes. The UNC is calling for the President to be removed from office, over what they allege is Her Excellency’s failure to act impartially and independently in matters relating to the Police Service Commission.

Responding to the motion, Dr. Rowley said it was clear the Opposition leader had no understanding of how the Constitution works.

“By bringing the President’s name into the Parliament so that she, her imps, pimps and chimps can scandalize the President in the worst way.”

“Those who have been following that foolishness because you have not been party to conversations behind closed doors in this country, let me tell you something that you don’t know. When the Amendment came to the Parliament to allow the Commission to proceed towards appointing a DCP for the TTPS, it was said by these very people that the Amendment was meant to keep the CoP that we had. But by the time the thing worked itself out to where we are now with the ruling from the Court (which found that Griffith’s appointment as Top Cop was invalid)… the answer now is that we want to get rid of the Commissioner. All I will say to the Opposition is choose a side. You can’t be speaking out of both sides of your mouth on the same issue,” she said.
