PM Rowley: Digital Public Sector Could Aid In Stamping Out White Collar Crime

By Newsroom

One of the long-term benefits of a fully digitalized public sector is the withering out of white collar crimes.

So says Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, who made the comment as he presented at Monday’s Public Sector Leadership for Digital Transformation Workshop, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Dr. Rowley noted, a digital trail would make it easier to compile evidence to ensure accountability.

“An assault on white colour criminal conduct ,which currently flourishes with impunity, but which will wither if access is digitally controlled and recorded and information in the form of evidence identifies who did what, where, when, how and under what authority,” he said.

Dr. Rowley noted over the last two years of the pandemic, government had taken significant steps towards digitalization, even while recognizing there was still much more to be done to improve the ease of service in the public sector.

“As a Cabinet, we have conducted the vast majority of our meetings for the last two years on-line. We were able to do this because, fortuitously, the Ministry of Public Administration, working with the Office of the Prime Minister, introduced our e-Cabinet application in September 2019, mere months before the pandemic reached our shores. Court sessions were held online, the TT Travel Pass was developed and launched and the online application process for birth certificates was made available. Indeed, we have seen some of the benefits of harnessing technology in our ministries and in our ability to serve the public,” he noted.
