PM To Propose Price Cap On Motor Vehicle Tax Exemption For Cabinet Members

By Newsroom

Following public discourse about Parliamentarians abusing the vehicle tax exemption to purchase several luxury vehicles, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has said he will personally make a proposal to his Cabinet to cap the exemption of motor vehicles.

“I will propose to my colleagues at the Cabinet- that the Cabinet take the position that the average exemption on motor vehicles be capped at $350,000. Because that will give you a fine car. It’s not a car that the government is giving you and it’s not money that will come to the treasury if you don’t get it,” Dr. Rowley said.

He made the statement while making his contribution to the budget debate in the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

“But some people will love to see MPs punished. If you don’t get the exemption, you don’t buy the car. If you buy the car and you get the exemption, it doesn’t go to the treasury. You don’t buy the car, the tax is not due. Those of us who genuinely serve the public and those of us who genuinely share what we earn…we have no problem,” he added.

The PM said while he is not against the tax- he is against it being taken advantage of.

“But if they are being used to facilitate other people in the way that they have been then they require to be looked at” he said.
