PNM Three-Day Internal Election Process Begins Today

By Newsroom

The PNM membership will begin voting in its internal election on Saturday- marking day one of the three-day voting process.

It comes after a legal challenge to halt the process- launched by Karen Nunez-Tesheira- was unsuccessful before the courts this week.

On Wednesday, High Court Judge  heard Nunez-Tesheira’s argument that the move to hold a three-day election process is against the party’s constitution.

Nunez-Tesheira, one of three candidates challenging the incumbent Dr. Keith Rowley for leadership of the PNM, sought the court’s granting of one of two outcomes: that the party’s internal election scheduled for this weekend and December 4 be held on one day in the customary way, or the granting of an interim order to postpone the election date pending the determination of the Claim.

But in his ruling, Justice Rampersad said he could find no evidence of an unfair election, effectively dismissing Nunez-Tesheira’s application for an injuntion.

That decision was appealed by Nunez-Tesheira, with the High Court upholding the Justice’s initial ruling in a virtual court meeting held on Friday afternoon.

The other two polling days are November 27th (tomorrow) and December 4th.
