Police Make 23 Arrests In Weekend Exercises

Twenty-three people were arrested for various offences and quantities of firearms, ammunition and narcotics seized by officers during coordinated and sustained anti-crime  operations conducted across several Divisions over the weekend.

Officers of the South Western Division Task Force (SWDTF) conducted ‘Operation Safe Streets’ from 3 am, on Saturday, in the Penal district, during which they arrested three male suspects for possession of a revolver loaded with three rounds of ammunition, a quantity of cocaine and eleven more rounds of ammunition. Officers also discovered four cellular phones, two SIM cards and gold jewellery in the structure.

The three men, a 22-year-old of Penal, a 25-year-old of San Fernando and a 19-year-old of Princes Town, were at the time hiding in an old wooden structure at Rochard Road, Penal.

A fourth suspect, a 44-year-old of La Brea was also held during the exercise for possession of a quantity of marijuana.

Also in the SWD this week, three suspects, including a man wanted in connection with an attempted murder and house breaking offences, were arrested by officers in the Santa Flora district around 11:50 am on Thursday.

The 22-year-old, along with a 35-year-old, both of Point Fortin and a 19-year-old woman of Claxton Bay, were arrested with a quantity of items in their possession which were reportedly stolen from a Point Fortin church earlier this week.

Operation Safe Streets was coordinated by Snr. Supt. Remy, W/Supt. Theodore-Persad, ASP Nanan, ASP Victor, ASP Mathura and Insp. Prescott.

In the Central Division, officers conducted an anti-crime exercise, which resulted in the arrest of four men for possession of firearm and ammunition.

The men, ages 20 to 35, are from the Kelly Village, Caroni and Valencia districts. Meanwhile, an exercise in Area East of the North Central Division, conducted between 4:30 am and 8 am, in the Piarco area yesterday, resulted in officers arresting two men, ages 28 and 21, for gang-related activities and robbery offences.

In the Southern Division, officers of the San Fernando Police Station, who responded to a report of Domestic Violence in the Duncan Village district, were informed of the presence of a quantity of marijuana on the compound by a woman.

Officers subsequently seized approximately one kilogramme of the drug from the premises and investigations are ongoing. In the North Eastern Division (NED), Task Force and Gang Unit officers, conducted an exercise, between 1 am and 4 am on Friday during which they stopped and searched a gold
Nissan Almera motor vehicle, with four male occupants.


The search resulted in officers finding a number of house breaking implements, including a lifting device, a hammer, a wrench and a crow bar.

The four suspects, of Morvant and Arouca were arrested for possession of house breaking implements.

And, a DUI exercise conducted in the Morvant District, overnight resulted in the arrest of six persons, ages 38 to 51, for driving over the prescribed limit while three others were ticketed for driving a vehicle without a certificate of insurance.

Both exercises were coordinated by Snr. Supt. Edwards, Supt. Ravenales and ASP Singh, all of the NED.
