Police Service Commission Demands Apology For “Misleading” Statement About Top Cop, TTPS Performance Surveys

By Newsroom

The Police Service Commission (PSC) is correcting what it calls a negligent and misleading article published in today’s Guardian newspaper, in which it is written that a recent survey to rate the performance of the Top Cop and the TTPS had been done on behalf of the PSC.

In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the PSC said: “This assertion is untrue, misleading and negligently made. It is apparent that the writer has made the above statement without caring as to whether it is true or the negative impact that will have on the independence and integrity of the Police Service Commission.”

The survey in question saw a 80% performance rating for the Police Commissioner and 59% for the TTPS.

For the two surveys of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service are conducted annually (Public Trust, Confidence and Satisfaction Survey) the PSC said its sole roles were to “utilize the in-house resources of the Police Service Commission Secretariat to undertake the surveys; and adhere to the principle that the performance appraisal of the Commissioner of Police is confidential and must be guarded from inappropriate disclosure.”

The Commission  calls for the newspaper to retract the article and issue an apology, saying the false claim compromises the body’s independence and integrity.

“The Commission expects the retraction and apology to receive the same prominence as the original article did.” it ended.
