The local football fraternity has suffered another hit this week, with the passing of iconic national youth football coach, Nigel Grosvenor.

Grosvenor, lovingly called “Grovey”,  died on Thursday night, after a more than month long battle with COVID-19.

Mr. Grosvenor, who is also recognized as one of the most successful coaches at the Secondary School level, was admitted to the Couva General Hospital on the evening of August 22nd.

The Ministry of Sport and Community Development was among those expressing  sadness over news of the coach’s passing.

Former Sport Minister, Anil Roberts, also paid his respects to the treasured coach.

“You know what makes a great coach? When you see an athlete and your initial reaction is ‘My goodness, this child should really study hard, go to school and get 10 ones. No co-ordination, no athletic ability, no fitness, wrong body type, high body fat percentage. A great coach turns that non-athlete into a good athlete,” he said in a post on his personal Facebook page.

“Grovey” is a former winning football coach of St. Anthony’s College and Queen’s Royal College He has five National Intercol and two National League titles and is credited for guiding the fortunes of 2006 World Cup stars Carlos Edwards and Kenwyne Jones,” it said.
