The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has advised the national community of a temporary reduction in production at the Caroni Arena Water Treatment Plant on Thursday, 9th April, 2026, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.
During these six hours, production will be reduced to approximately 45 IMGD (Imperial Million Gallons per Day) to facilitate emergency cleaning and maintenance of the Raw Water Station. This critical intervention has become necessary following significant rainfall over the holiday weekend, which caused flooded river conditions and resulted in heavy debris and silt accumulation within the raw water sump at Caroni.
The debris has restricted inflow to the raw water pumps, affected operational performance, and caused subsequent tripping on the undercurrent. Without immediate action, there is an increased likelihood of damage to the pumps and potential disruption to full production capacity. The Authority emphasises that this cleaning is essential to protect the pumps and ensure the continued uninterrupted operation of the Plant at full capacity once works are completed.
