Singing Francine has passed away

By Shirvan Williams

The Calypso fraternity is mourning the loss of an icon. Francine Edwards was known in the calypso word as “Singing Francine” passed away early this morning. She was 82 years old.

Singing Francine was born in Barbados on February 13th 1943 and came to Trinidad at a young age. She was well known for using her platform to advocate for women’s rights.

In 1975, she sang “A Call to Women,” encouraging more women to use calypso music to express themselves. Three years later she sang “Runaway.” A track she used to highlight the rise in domestic violence.

She was one of the most successful calypsonians in this country and was the National Calypso Queen competition in 1972, 1973, 1981 and 1983.
