Sixty-Three Road Fatalities Recorded For 2020

By Newsroom

Official Statement from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service:

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is urging all drivers to obey all road traffic laws and to always exercise caution when driving, in an effort to maintain the positive gains made so far for 2020.

Two recent road traffic deaths have pushed the number of road fatalities for 2020 to 63. Whilst the figure for the corresponding period of January 1st 2020 to August 19th 2020 stood at 79, this 20% decrease could be easily eroded if errant drivers are allowed to continue to disregard the traffic laws that are in place to protect drivers, as well as pedestrians.

Last Friday, 14th August, 2020 the country tragically lost a young teenage driver who would have celebrated his 19th birthday in September. West End Police are continuing investigations as to the cause of the accident. The Valencia Police are also currently investigating a hit and run accident which occurred at around 9:30 pm yesterday, Tuesday 18th August, 2020, which fatally injured an unidentified male pedestrian who was walking along the Valencia Old Road, in the vicinity of the Valencia River.

The TTPS wishes to extend sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and continues to urge all road users to be responsible and careful on the nation’s roadways. The public is also encouraged to limit their journeys wherever possible to those of absolute necessity as part of efforts to support national COVID-19 risk reduction measures.
