“Stop Killing Our Youth”: Beetham Residents Burn Debris In Protest Of Police Shootings

By Newsroom

Beetham residents burn tyres and other debris on Monday, in protest of the killing of three young men by police over the weekend.

Fabien Richards, 22, Isaiah Williams, 17 and Niko Williams, 21, were shot dead in the early hours of Saturday morning. while returning from a birthday party in Cocorite.

Residents accuse the TTPS of killing the youth of their community, instead of fulfilling their mandate to protect and serve. There is a heavy police presence at this time, as officers work to move debris from the roadway.

“Them is innocent youth men. Them fellas ain’t even have no case, them don’t have no police weapon nothing. They say they had a gun, but people in town witness they had no weapon. Come on. man, police supposed to protect and serve. They killing the youths,” one resident, Darrien Boyke said.

Meanwhile, The First Wave Movement is calling on acting Commissioner of Police, Mc Donald Jacob to launch a thorough investigation into the killings of two young men and one teenager near Republic Bank, on Independence Square, Port of Spain on Saturday morning.

The Movement is cautious about the  “trigger-happy” response of police officers who were never properly trained to defuse a situation nor were they trained in communications and public relations skills.
