The Election Challenge Is Over: Guyana Elects A President

Five months after Guyanese voters went to the polls to elect its new government, a President has finally been elected.

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) declared Mohammed Irfaan Ali, President elect on Sunday afternoon, binging to an end what has been months of legal challenges and controversy.

The decision followed the submission of the report of the March 2 , general and regional elections by the Chief Elections Officer to the commission.

The declaration was made by Chief Elections Officer, Retired Justice Claudette Singh.

According to the official result, the Peoples Progressive Party/Civic(PPP/C) won 33 seats while A Partnership for National Unity +Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition obtained 31 seats.The small parties also picked-up a seat.

Ali, 40, served as Minister of Housing under the previous PPP/C administration.

He was elected presidential candidate of the PPP/C in January 2019.
