Thieves Make Off With Manhole Covers In Chaguanas, Councillor Condemns Action

By Newsroom

Residents in the Chaguanas borough are having a concern with manhole covers being stolen.

Councillor for Monroe Road/Caroni Savannah Road, Adrian Ali, says last week alone six manhole covers were stolen.

“The residents of Jerningham Junction Road, Charlieville, School Lane Munroe Road, Endeavour Main Road are yet again suffering at the hands of its perpetrators from the inconvenience of theft of several manhole covers in the area,” Ali said.

Last week alone, six covers were discovered missing.

This has certainly not been the first instance of such an incident since earlier in the year it was seen that five were stolen and had to be replaced.

The councillor says not only does this pose a safety threat for residents, but it also places a financial burden on the Borough.

“When these covers are stolen for scrap metal it can cost the Chaguanas Borough Corporation approximately $1000 per cover to be replaced. At a time where the Corporation is experiencing budget constrictions and lack of funding, citizens are adding to the stresses of carrying out jobs and services effectively and efficiently” he added.
