Trade Minister Appeals To Supermarkets: Don’t Overburden Consumers

By Newsroom

Trade Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon is appealing to retailers to do their part and “be reasonable” with their pricing for consumers as it relates to the increase in flour.

At Thursday’s Post Cabinet media briefing, Minister Gopee-Scoon revealed that the Consumer Affairs Division has already taken note of large markups being implemented by some businesses.

Apart from flour, the Minister lamented that other staple products have been marked up by as much as 40-60%, though she said she was not yet ready to ‘name and shame’ the offenders.

At the same time, she said government would do its part in helping to mitigate the impacts of the rise in the price of flour as a result of global circumstances.

The Trade Minister said Government is reviewing the possibilities of helping citizens meet the cost of this basic item, and will report back on their findings in two weeks.
