Former government minister Clifton De Coteau has died.

De Coteau, who served as Minister of Child Development under the People’s Partnership, passed away early this morning.

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar expressed sadness over his passing, saying it was a pleasure to have him in her Cabinet between 2010-2015.

“Few people have had the distinguished honour of serving at all levels of our great party as Clifton did, a testament not only of his commitment to the UNC but dedication to our country. He moved through the ranks of our party serving as Local Government Representative, Member of Parliament, Cabinet Minister, Alderman, Vice Chairman of the National Executive as well as Education officer,” she said.

Reflecting on his personal attributes, she said: “Clifton was more than just a UNC representative, he embodied the true beauty of humanity in his actions of kindness, people-centred approach and love for those around him. It was these qualities which enabled him to be the first UNC MP for Moruga Tableland. “

The T&T Parliament also offered condolences on the former minister’s passing.

Prior to joining the political arena, Mr. De Coutou had a firm career in education, serving as principal of the St. Stephen’s College.

The Ministry of Education, in a statement, said: “The people of Trinidad and Tobago has lost a true educator who devoted his life to serving his country. May his soul rest in peace.”
