Trinidad Loses A Pioneering Medic, Dr Waveney Charles.

By Newsroom

Trinidad and Tobago has lost an icon in the medical field Dr. Waveney Patricia Charles, who passed quietly at the age of 75 years. Dr. Charles, a humble and unassuming woman, who was described as “towering” in the field of medicine, was the first registered haematologist in Trinidad and Tobago. She pioneered the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders in this country, and in her role as Director of the National Blood Transfusion Service, she transformed and internationalized this country’s blood banking service and established a paediatric haematology programme that resulted in a decreased mortality rate among children with Thalassemia, Sickle Cell Anemia and Haemophilia. Dr. Charles was the recipient of the Chaconia Medal (GOLD). She was an unsung heroine to parents whose children she had saved from certain death sometimes administering life-saving medicine after midnight or treating a child who developed a fever which could have been a veritable death sentence. “Waveney was a towering Haematologist who helped save thousands of lives with God’s Grace in the areas of Sickle Cell Disease. Thalassemia and later Haematologic carcinomas,” DR Tim Gopeesingh said when he paid tribute to Dr Charles.. “She was such a gentle kind-hearted caring soft-spoken but stern, beloved Doctor to her patients and deeply loved by all her colleagues. “The Profession has lost a noble, brilliant and dedicated doctor. Thousands of private and public patients, and so many of us as her colleagues, mourn our loss over her very sad her passing. May the gracious Lord Bless her Soul as she rests in Eternal Peace,” Dr Gopeesingh said.
