T&T Chamber Pleased With Early Phase Two Reopening

By Newsroom

The decision by government to fast-track the implementation of Phase Two of reopening the economy has been welcomed by the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Commerce.

“We are happy The Government has agreed to reopen the manufacturing, construction, automotive repair, tyre shops, laundry and dry-cleaning sectors early. We see this as protecting employment and generating foreign exchange earnings,” the Chamber said in a statement on Saturday.

In addition, it said based on the success of the actions taken in the next phase, it looks forward to government being able to accelerate the opening of other sectors.

When government first announced the three-tiered plan for resuming business activity last Saturday, it was met with strong criticism from the Chamber, who  described the measures as  “risk averse”.  At the time, it called on government to give second thought to allowing businesses to resume activity, in an effort to stop massive leakages of revenue.

With Phase Two set to begin on Thursday (May 21st) the Chamber said it has already circulated the guidelines from the Ministry of Health to its members to follow. It is also in support of the ‘No Mask-No Service policy’ and asks all businesses and consumers to adhere.
