Official Statement from the Ministry of National Security: 

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago, largely through the Counter Trafficking Unit (CTU) at the Ministry of National Security, continues to bolster this country’s efforts to combat human trafficking.

As stated in the United States Department of State Trafficking in Persons (TiPs) Report 2020, Trinidad and Tobago maintains its ranking at Tier 2. Countries in Tier 2 are those whose governments are recognized as making significant efforts to meet the Trafficking Victims Protection Act’s (TVPA) minimum standards.

The report acknowledges several measures which have been taken by the Government to improve this country’s counter trafficking efforts, including the prosecution of suspected human traffickers; the increase in anti-trafficking training for officials, including frontline officers, judges and magistrates; and the heightened collaboration between the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s Special Operations Response Team and intelligence body to monitor suspicious establishments.

The Ministry of National Security takes note of the recommendations made in the report, specific to Trinidad and Tobago, and will take these into account going forward.

The Counter Trafficking Unit continues to work closely with partner agencies, NGOs and civil society to increase public awareness of human trafficking and reduce incidents of Trafficking in Persons in Trinidad and Tobago.
