A meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne and Venezuela’s Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Carlos Perez Silva took place on Monday, with a view to finding a peaceful resolve over Venezuela’s detention of Guyanese fishing vessels and crew on January 21st.

In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, it explained that T&T has intervened in the matter given this country currently holds chairmanship of CARICOM.

Dr. Browne urged for an immediate and peaceful resolution to the matter.

Tensions have been rising between Venezuela and Guyana, over a border dispute that encompasses oil-rich deepwater acreage.

The Venezuelan foreign ministry today refuted the statement from Guyana’s government which alleged that the two vessels were in Guyanese waters when they were intercepted on 21 January.
