TTPS: 154 Minors Ran Away From Home For The Year So Far

By Newsroom

Since the start of the year, police have received 154 reports of minors running away from home, with statistics revealing that in several of these cases, children are fleeing abusive situations.

This includes sexual grooming, pressure to perform well in school, or even challenging socio-economic backgrounds.

This is out of a total of 327 missing person reports filed for 2022 thus far.

The statistics were revealed during a police media conference on Thursday.

The Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the TTPS reports that 142 of these minors have already returned home.

Asst Supt Darryl Ramdass acknowledged the need for a collaborative approach to successfully tackle the issue.

“We have to have social interventions, so we work hand in hand with our Community Police, our Child Protection Unit, the Children’s Authority, with a view to alleviating these sort of behaviour and giving that support system for these vulnerable children.”

“It is disheartening at times to hear some of the stories but we try all in our remit to foster and take the absolute care in bringing these reports to closure, and seeking the social intervention that is required for these vulnerable children,” he added.

Supt. Ramdass urged parents to be cognizant of their children’s behaviors.

“Look at the behavioural patterns that exists around them. See who they communicate with. We are in the advent of social media, pay attention to their phones,” he said.
