Two children, ages 9 and 13, were present at the scene when former Maritime CEO, John Smith, was killed at his Saddle Road, Maraval home on Friday, in what investigators believe was a domestic dispute.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s (TTPS) Victims and Witness Support Unit is providing counselling and intervention to the children at this time, according to a statement issued on Saturday morning.

Officers of the Maraval Police Station responded to a distress call at around 4:30pm on Friday, in which it was reported to police that there was a domestic dispute at a residence in Catalina Courts, Saddle Road, Maraval at around 4:30pm.

Upon their arrival, first responders allegedly observed a woman said to be the victim’s wife, lying next to Mr. Smith,  age 73, who appeared to be motionless.

The woman reportedly made certain utterances which arose the officers’ suspicion who later arrested her pending further investigations.

Detectives from the HBI Region One, who took lead of the investigation, are currently interrogating the suspect at the  Central Police Station, Port-of-Spain.

In a statement on Friday night, the Maritime Financial Group wrote:

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss that we make this post tonight. We are devastated to announce the passing of John Henry Smith, the current Chairman of Maritime General and Fidelity Finance.

Mr. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
