TTPS To Use Heavy Hand In Enforcing Covid Regulations, Says Griffith

By Newsroom

Over the next three weeks, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service will adopt a no nonsense approach in enforcing the Covid-19 regulations.

Top Cop Gary Griffith announced that coming out of a meeting with newly appointed National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds, the TTPS will now report daily to both the Minister and the National Security Council, which is chaired by the Prime Minister.

The reports will provide feedback including the number of tickets and arrests issued across all nine divisions, which Griffith says will help guide policy decisions.

New Covid-19 restrictions come into effect today, and will remain in place until May 16th, in the first instance.

The measures include a ban on public gatherings for entertainment and concerts, a reversion of public servants reporting to duty at 50% on a rotational basis, a limit of 10 persons for funerals and weddings, while places of worship must now congregate at  25%, down from the initial 50%.

In his first appearance as National Security Minister on Wednesday, Fitzgerald Hinds shared a request for the TTPS to set up special police squads to target persons who refuse to adhere to Covid-19 regulations, saying such citizens must “feel it in their pockets”.
