The United States Embassy in Port of Spain has issued a security alert for American citizens, following a day of intense demonstrations across the capital city.

The Embassy, in a statement, advised US citizens to avoid parts of Trinidad including the Beetham Highway, East Port of Spain, Maraval and other areas of unrest.

“Please be advised that there are reports of civil unrest in the areas of Beetham Highway, East Port of Spain, and Maraval, Port of Spain with additional reports of rioting and gunfire exchange on Beetham Highway and East Port of Spain areas.”

Tuesday’s protest action, which stemmed from the police killing of three men over the weekend, claimed the life of one woman, Ornella Greaves, at the hands of police.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service will remain on a Red Alert over the next 48 hours, according to Police Commissioner, Gary Griffith.
