UWI’s Debe Campus Transformed Into A COVID-19 Quarantine Facility

By Newsroom

After overcoming a brief hiccup with securing approvals from the relevant Regional Corporation, the Debe Campus of the University of the West Indies will be made available as a quarantine facility by the end of this week. National Security Minister Stuart Young made the revelation on Wednesday morning.

“There are four dormitories of twenty-four units; it will be up and ready by Friday.” Mr. Young said in a virtual press briefing, adding “in touring the campus we discovered that there are other facilities and God forbid we need to use them, we can quickly turn them around in the same way (the National Raquet Centre) Tacarigua has been turned around.”

The National Security Minister said it is government’s intent to have as many similar facilities set up as possible. “Because God forbid we have a surge and we need to deal with it.” he said.

One of the four dorms on the campus will be reserved for healthcare workers.

Minister Young ended by thanking the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Force for their work in preparing the facilities, saying “This is what they do. They’re securing every single one of these facilities. Assisting the Ministry of Health in some of the most mundane jobs. For those who said all they were doing is shining boots and medals”.
