Venezuela’s Opposition Leader Juan Guaido sworn in as Speaker of the Parliament

By Newsroom

Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaido has been sworn in for another term as speaker of parliament but not before a tense stand-off with the armed forces. They were trying to prevent him from entering the Congress. Moments before the vote, there were chaotic scenes at Venezuela’s National Assembly as National Guards in riot gear formed a cordon around the building.

This didn’t stop Mr Guaidó as he and another 100 opposition lawmakers broke through it. The move came two days after Mr Guaidó was prevented from attending a vote to re-elect him as Speaker. He has described the actions as a “parliamentary coup”.
