Residents of Upper Abbe Poujade, Carenage took matters into their own hands on Monday, carrying out a severe beating on a man accused of raping a child.

The suspect was stripped naked and beaten before being tied to a poll in the area.

Officers later arrived at the scene and untied the man and he was taken to the St James infirmary.

He was transferred to the Port of Spain General Hospital for further medical treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

The grandmother of the 11 year old child reported to police this morning, that the man had raped the child. 

Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
