Election Watch: Vincentians Head To The Polls

By Newsroom

Citizens of St. Vincent and the Grenadines head to the polls on Thursday to elect a new government as the CARICOM nation holds its general election.

The race is between two main contenders- the current administration, the Unity Labour Party (ULP) led by political leader Dr Ralph Gonsalves and the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Dr Godwin Friday.

Dr. Gonsalves, 74, will be seeking a fifth consecutive term, having served as Prime Minister of the country since 2001.

If he is successful at the polls, he would become the longest serving Prime Minister in the Caribbean region.

The election day comes in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines battling a dengue outbreak.
