WATCH: Superblue Gets Street Named After Him In Hometown Of Point Fortin

By Newsroom

Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein (LEFT) and Veteran soca star Austin "Superblue" Lyons (RIGHT) point to the newly erected street sign in the entertainer's honor.

“Thank you Heavenly Father for this great day. Always going to remember this.”

This was the sentiment shared by veteran soca artiste, Austin ‘Superblue” Lyons, as he expressed gratitude over the Point Fortin Borough Corporation’s fulfillment of the decision to rename a street in his honor.

Austin Lyons Street, formerly Baptist Road in Point Fortin, holds special significance to the entertainer, given it is the street he grew up on.

“Thank God I am alive to see this,” Lyons posted on his social media on Wednesday afternoon. He captioned a video with himself and Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein installing the sign,  joking, “Well Well! You guys think I could only sing. Watch hard work here now, putting up my sign”. (See video below)

Wednesday’s historic sign erection came seven years after Lyons was given the keys to the Borough of Point Fortin, by then Mayor Clyde Paul, who first made mention of plans for the entertainer to have a street named in his honor. It came after the star’s big win in 2013, returning from an almost 13 year musical hiatus to secure the Soca Monarch and Road March titles with ‘Fantastic Friday’.

Minister Hosein, in a post to his social media on Wednesday evening, said “far too often, we wait until it’s too late to honor those who have made exceptional contributions to our nation’s history. Whether it be sport personalities, cultural icons or community role models, I would like to see more street names reflecting the contributions of Trinbagonians to their country.”

Minister Hosein added, “Moreover, I would like us to celebrate our icons while they are still with us. This is what made the installation of Austin Lyons Street in Point Fortin today such an auspicious event. I was honoured to celebrate a living legend in the place where his story began.”

For Lyons, the honor is one he does not take lightly. “In your work be Legendary, In your life make History. I had a great day in Point Fortin,” he said.
