With A Decline In New Covid-19 Infections, How Long Will T&T’s Lockdown Last?

By Newsroom

While Covid-19 infections seem to be on the decline- talk about easing restrictions is still off the table- at least for now.

Speaking at Saturday’s Covid-19 press briefing, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley said government was being cautious in easing restrictions, so as not to undo the gains that have been made over the last month and a half.

“We are going in the right direction, but not fast enough. One of the worst things that could happen is ending the lockdowns too early. We are making progress but more is needed before we take coming out actions,” Dr. Rowley said.

All things remaining equal, the Public Health Regulations which imposes a ban on all non-essential business activity- remains in effect until July 4th.

The State of Emergency- largely distinguished by a nightly curfew- expires on August 31st.

Dr. Rowley said he had hoped to at least be in a position to announce the resumption of work in the construction sector when he made his address on Saturday, but decided against so.

The ban on construction, in particular, will be in place for at least another 14 days before further consideration is giving- taking closure up to June 26th.

One measure that’s being considered, though, is the reopening of the country’s borders.

PM Rowley said he’s hoping that move- ending an almost year and a half border closure- could happen by the second week in July.

“We are still on track with that… I was talking with the Minister this morning, with CAL, to lay out the framework- so that is on track,” the PM revealed.
