124 Murders, 9% Detection Rate, Top Cop Assures Nation: TTPS In Control

By Newsroom

In the face of an escalating crime problem and 124 murders reported for the year so far, Police Commissioner Erla Christopher has asserted that the TTPS is in control and aptly able to address the increase in violent crimes.

The Top Cop’s comments at a news conference on Thursday come even as Head of the Homicide Bureau, Rishi Singh, reported that the detection rate for murders this year stands at nine percent.

“We want to assure the public that the police, we are in control, and we are able to control the increase in the violent crime,” the Police Commissioner said in a news conference on Thursday, acknowledging that the crime problem has “fueled a widespread fear and anxiety in our community.”

Twenty-three people have been charged with murder for the year, though only 11 of these are related to homicides committed in 2024. Head of the Homicide Bureau Rishi Singh says, meanwhile, that gang and drug activity contribute to 56% of killings.

The TTPS also reported that 117 weapons and 1,430 rounds of ammunition have been recovered since the beginning of this year.

Over the last four years, 2,840 firearms were seized, along with more than 84,000 rounds of ammunition.
