A Historical Moment: Motion To Be Moved In Parliament Today Seeking To Oust President

By Newsroom

The House of Representatives holds an Extraordinary Sitting today, where a motion to remove President Paula-Mae Weekes will be moved by the Opposition.

It marks the first time in T&T’s 45 years as a Republic, that a motion has been filed to remove a sitting President. For the motion to be successful, at least two-thirds of the Electoral college- which comprises Senators and MPs, must vote in its favor.

The Opposition stands on its allegation that Her Excellency colluded with Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley to influence the Police Service Commission’s selection process for a Police Commissioner.

When the House of Representatives convenes at 10:30, there will be no debate.

Instead, the procedure is that votes will be cast by the Electoral college- which comprises Senators and MPs. For the motion to be successful, at least two-thirds of members must vote in its favor.

If the motion is adopted by the vote of not less than two-thirds of the total membership of the Electoral College, the Speaker shall forthwith inform the Chief Justice of the adoption of the motion by the Electoral College.
